Build your Own PC – Part 1

Hello All,

I spent few hours today researching for various parts needed to build my own super cool pc. I finally short listed the items I need.
Hardware Required
PC Case -
Hard Drive
Processor
Processor Cooling Fan
Motherboard
Memory Modules
Power Supply
Video Card

I checked newegg.com , and started researching with one item at a time.  Here is the configuration I came up with:

Power Supply : CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7

Cost (newegg) : 89.99 , with 20 dollar mail in rebate , the final cost is 69.99

Motherboard : GIGABYTE GA-E7AUM-DS2H LGA 775 NVIDIA GeForce 9400 HDMI Micro ATX Intel

This one has built-in video card

Cost (newegg) : 129.00, with 10 dollar mail in rebate , the final cost is 119.99

CPU: Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core

Cost (newegg) : 279.99

RAM : Make sure the RAM you pick is compatible with your motherboard.  For the motherboard I selected above, it requires DDR2-800 (240 pin) SDRAM

CORSAIR 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel

Cost (newegg) : 44.99 , with 25 dollar mail-in-rebate, total cost is 19.99

Video Card – It can range anywhere from 40 dollar + , make sure the video card you purchase is compatible with your mother board. If you need a video card with tv tuner, remote, svideo, it will be slightly expensive than the regular one.

CPU Fan : CPU Fan are not expensive, it ranges from 14.99 +

PC Case : NZXT ATX Mid Tower , Tiger direct : 69.99

Hard drive : Seagate has a better review than the western digital, hitachi or samsung, and those are not that expensive. these days  you may be able to find 1T for less than 100 dollars, if you look for some deals.

Currently, Frys.com has a sale for 1.5T harddrive for 117.00 free shipping. I might go this weekend to grab one before the sale runs out.

Sometimes, while buying the above parts, make sure to also check amazon.com, sometimes, they have items 10-20 dollar cheaper than newegg.

With my above configuration, my pc will probably cost about 700-800 dollars. But atleast, I will know what I am getting.

Always decide what your objectives are, before building a pc. Whether you are looking for a high performance device, gaming device, storage device etc , will help you determine what kind of computer you would like to have.

Well, in my next part, I will tell you what configuration I have decided to go with and will guide you step by step on building a pc.

If you like my suggestions above, or looking forward to my next part, or have any comments, questions for me, feel free to comment.

Ciao.
